Conflict is a dilemma or a challenge that characters must solve in a literary work. In The Lord of The Flies many conflicts arise. However, the primary conflict is that of the boys on the island and their fear of the potential beast. The fear of the beast is an illusion in their head that arose from the idea that they are children alone on this island facing the unknown. Since they are unaware of the many things that could be on this island, they are afraid of there being such a thing. Throughout their days on the island, their fearseems to grow and more of the kids are frightened. This fear the boys formulate in their heads, interferes with many of the boys responsibilities and focuses.

If the fire would be lit at all times then maybe the ships or a plane would have seen it. However, Jack is too carried away with the idea of the of killing the pig and also finding the beast and killing it. The fire is a vital symbol throughout The Lord of The Flies. The fire might be one of the only ways for the boys rescuing while stranded on the island. The lighting of the fire and the continues watch of it develops into a dilemma. It symbolizes the idea of hope and rescue to the boys by creating a signal smoke. However, later on, when Jack is hunting for Ralph, his focus of a fire becomes one that will push out Ralph from his hiding spot.
The fire was a big one and the drum-roll that he had thought was left so far behind was nearer. Couldnt a fire outrun a galloping horse? He could see the sun-splashed ground over an area of perhaps fifty yards from where he lay, and as he watched, the sunlight in every patch blinked at him. This was so like the curtain that flapped in his brain that for a moment he thought the blinking was inside him. But then the patches blinked more rapidly, dulled and went out, so that he saw that a great heaviness of smoke lay between the island and the sun. (Golding
