Throughout the 1600s and the 1800s wars between the Indians and Colonists occurred frequently. Soldiers from both Britain and America were not experienced in frontier warfare. Due to their unfamiliarity, ranger companies were created. Rangers were most often used on the defensive side of war, warning soldiers of oncoming attacks. The captain of the first Ranger force was named Colonel Benjamin Church. Church adopted a lot of his fighting strategies from the Natives. The Rangers used the Natives as teachers, gaining more knowledge of how to combat them with every attack. Throughout these wars, thousands of captives were taken, thus began captivity
