Performance management and performance appraisal are both methods of employee evaluation. Performance management is a more flexible and casual method compared to the more traditional performance appraisal. Performance appraisals are typically more formal and structured. Depending on the company needs, they might prefer one method over the other. Many organizations are beginning to adopt the performance appraisal method, as it is the most current and fair way to evaluate employees. One thing an organization should focus on when making the decision is whether the goal is long or short term. Another criteria is the employee development. Both methods vary drastically but according to the needs of the organization, either method can prove to be a good fit for that organization.

Organizations might choose a performance management process over a performance appraisal system because of what it’s focused on and how it is implemented. With performance management the organization has continuous communication with employees. Managers are focused to improve organizational effectiveness towards making sure that employees are producing and benefiting the organization to its max. That means committing more with the employees, providing additional training on a constant basis if needed, evaluation, consulting, process data, etc. The performance management process is more focused on benefiting the organization productivity, so they plan from scratch, they develop, perform, asses, review and ultimately give feedback. In the other hand the Performance appraisal does carry out its goals as well but there is few to limited approach. With this system management only rates performance and reviews with employees once or twice a year, not as often as with the performance management process. When choosing one of the systems, organizations should be aware of its own culture and how they are structured. Making sure that by the one they choose is the right one based on their environment.
