The subjective data given is a history of asthma is complaining of nasal itching, sneezing, and rhinorrhea. She states her symptoms are worse in the spring and fall. She does have difficulty sleeping due to congestion. She does not smoke but does have 2 cats in the home. The objective data is she does appear tired but no respiratory distress. Her vital signs are T98.8, R18, P88 and BP 128/80. Nasal turbinates are swollen, boggy and pale, bluish gray. Thin watery secretions are seen. Two questions I would ask this patient is first, What medications are you currently taking. She may be taking OTC or prescription medication and knowing which ones will help me diagnose the problem. The second question I would ask is about her history with allergies, especially with animal dander. Asthmatic patients tend to have allergic triggers. According to Morris & Long (2010)., The prevalence of sensitization to cat and dog allergens is high in the general population and poses a challenge to the physician managing allergic asthma. Adequate allergen avoidance is difficult to achieve because of the physical characteristics of airborne animal allergens and patient noncompliance. Allergen-specific high-dose subcutaneous immunotherapy has shown benefit in cat-allergic patients with asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis. . . References Bickley, L. (2017).
